On 6 October 2020, the Federal Budget was released, with important news related to Home Affairs’ proposed skilled and family migration intake for the new financial year.
While predictions indicate that that net overseas migration will be down by 71,200 persons this financial year, on the previous 2019/20 figure of 154,000 persons, it is expected that this will increase to around 201,000 by 2023/24.
With that in mind, rather than a reduction in the planning levels, for the 2020/21 period the allocation of net migration has remained the same as the previous year at 160,000 persons.
Further, the skilled stream will account for 2/3 of that allocation, with employer sponsored visas, global talent visas, and business innovation and investment visas being prioritised within the skilled visa stream.
