27 March 2017
On 27 March 2017 Department of immigration policy was updated to deem inappropriate the use of the standard 457 program for Store Manager positions. This is because these positions align with the occupation of Retail Manager (General) (ANZSCO 142111), which is not included in the Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List by Government. Employers should not be using the standard 457 program for such positions, regardless of the occupation stated (e.g. Customer Service Manager, Sales and Marketing Manager, Specialist Manager).
The only situation where the Department of Immigration anticipate that they may be prepared to take a more flexible approach is where a company is setting up a series of stores in Australia for the first time and wishes to employ an experienced store manager from overseas to lead their new flagship store in Australia, given the specialist nature of this particular work would go beyond that of a typical store manager. Flexibility under the occupation of Specialist Manager NEC may be considered in such circumstances on a one-off basis only. In such cases, future store manager positions would be expected to be sourced from the local labour market.
